Traces of Leonardo
An itinerary along the Adda to retrace the era of Da Vinci
The itinerary following the course of the Adda River starts in Olginate and continues to Brivio, a town much contested in ancient times due to the easy ford guarded by a powerful castle reflected in the river's waters. Looking from the river, one can still sense the medieval era, when carts passed through this stretch toward larger urban centers.
Along the route, the Santuario della Madonna del Bosco stands out; built in the 17th century, it is an essential stop for pilgrims. The journey then continues toward the Paderno Bridge, a splendid example of industrial archaeology, with a stop first at the Imbersago ferry—evidence of the brilliant genius of Leonardo da Vinci, who resided in these areas for a long time. The mountain backdrop struck the Master to such an extent that it served as a source of inspiration. Some experts maintain that the painting “The Virgin of the Rocks” was inspired by this scenery.
The path along the river can be explored on foot or by bicycle and offers an exceptional landscape in the heart of the Adda Park.
Other works also merit interest as unique examples of industrial archaeology, showcasing the first industrial settlements of the late 19th century, including the Paderno dams. For several years, the area has constituted an Ecomuseum that brings together all the natural, architectural, and religious highlights, offering itineraries and guided tours.
