Como

Discover Como, its lake, and what makes this place so special

The city’s foundation dates back to the Romans more than two thousand years ago. The historic center is enclosed by medieval walls among alleyways, squares, monuments, cafés, and elegant shop windows. Not to be missed are the Cathedral, the Romanesque basilicas of San Fedele and Sant’Abbondio, the Civic Museums, the Art Gallery, the Tempio Voltiano dedicated to Como scientist Alessandro Volta, the former Casa del Fascio and the rationalist quarter, the Silk Museum, the Life Electric monument, and the elegant Villa Olmo, an exceptional viewpoint where the pedestrian route “Chilometro della Conoscenza” (Kilometer of Knowledge) begins. Como is also the starting point for pleasant boat trips and scenic excursions, such as the funicular ride to reach the village of Brunate at nearly 800 meters altitude.
