The villa of explorers, of marriages and actors on Lake Como
On the headland of Lenno, Villa del Balbianello rises calm and marvellous looking at the water of Lake Como. This is one of the most beautiful corners of Lario. The view from the lodge and from the terrace drives your eyes to Bellagio and Comacina Island.
Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini built the villa in 1787 on a pre-existent Franciscan monastery. When he was dead, the property pass to the successors and then bought by Giuseppe Arconati Visconti, who hosted famous people of the time. Then were included improvements in the gardens.
Abandoned for decades, was bought by an American military then by a famous explorer, who used the villa as a museum for the heirloom from his journeys. Since 1988 Villa del Balbianello is managed by FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano.
So marvellous, Villa del Balbianello has hosted several weddings, most of VIPs and famous sport players.
It was also an international film stage: the most relevant once are Star Wars: Episode II – The clones attack (2002) by George Lucas and 007 James Bond – Casinò Royale (2006) by Martin Campbell.
