Tour of Garlate
SUNDAY 20 SEPTEMBER 2020
Villago proposes a cultural walk through the ancient streets of Garlate, to discover a particular lake community, more dedicated to the cultivation of ronchi in the hills and the production of silk, than to fishing and lake culture.
In reference to the historical evolution of the village, the itinerary will start from the ancient church of Santo Stefano, an important medieval parish church in the area built on the remains of a Roman villa, and will continue in the historic core of the town, among ancient feudal palaces and ancient courts rural buildings of the 15th century.
We will climb the hill, up to the historic cultivations of vineyards and wild chestnut trees, the ronchi, and we will descend along the stream that flows into the lake from the mountain above.
Next, we will learn about Garlate’s more recent past, the era of the rich silk industrialists, who built one of the most profitable silk production poles on the shores of the lake.
We will enter the beautiful courtyards of Villa Abegg, home to a family of Swiss industrialists, who built one of the most important spinning mills on the lake here.
We will also visit these industrial spaces, now transformed into a fascinating interactive museum: we will discover the historic machines of reeling and twisting silk thread … and we will start them because they are perfectly functional.
We will conclude with an interesting storytelling on the industrial culture of the early twentieth century, that culture that turned its back to the lake, but opened to the future, involving the whole town and its people.
