Villa del Balbianello

The villa of explorers, newlyweds, and actors on Lake Como

On the promontory of the Lenno coast, Villa del Balbianello stands tranquil and splendid, reflected in the waters of Lake Como. It is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque and photographed corners of the entire lake. The view from the villa's loggia and terrace extends as far as Bellagio and toward Isola Comacina.

The villa was built in 1787 on a pre-existing Franciscan monastery by Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini. Upon the cardinal's death, it was passed down and later purchased by Giuseppe Arconati Visconti, who hosted illustrious figures of the era. Subsequently, improvements were made to the garden.
Abandoned for decades, it was restored first by an American officer and then by a famous explorer, Guido Monzino, who filled the villa with relics from his adventures and renovated the garden. For over 30 years, the villa has been entrusted to the FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano.

In all its splendor, Villa del Balbianello has become the backdrop for numerous weddings of celebrities and famous athletes, especially in recent years. Adding to this great success, the villa, gardens, and patio—from which one can enjoy a breathtaking view of Lake Como—have been the set for various international films, including Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002) by George Lucas and 007 James Bond – Casino Royale (2006) by Martin Campbell.
