Monte Legnone
Hiking on Monte Legnone: trails and walks on Lake Como
With its strategic and panoramic position at the end of Lake Como, Monte Legnone serves as a watershed between Valtellina and the Lecco valleys. Numerous ridges descend from the summit toward the neighboring valleys and the lake; on the eastern slope, the military roads of the Linea Cadorna, dating back to World War I, which connected Pagnona (Valvarrone) and Delebio (Valtellina), are clearly visible and accessible. Legnoncino, a secondary peak to the west, offers easy routes and the opportunity to visit World War I trenches in excellent condition.
At 2,610 m, Monte Legnone is the highest peak of the Lecco Orobie Alps and is easily recognizable by its pyramidal shape. A wild mountain with a severe and imposing form, it is one of the most popular peaks among all the Lake Como Mountains. It offers spectacular views of the central and western Alpine chain and the Lecco Prealps.
Numerous ridges descend from the summit toward the neighboring valleys and the lake; on the eastern slope, the military roads of the Linea Cadorna, dating back to World War I, which connected Upper Valsassina with Valtellina, are clearly visible and accessible. The slopes of Legnone are home to roe deer, ibex, chamois, and hares. Of indescribable grace and charm are the eagles that soar above the summit, as if monitoring the progress of hikers aiming to reach the peak.
The numerous trails are suitable for every hiker: some sections overlap with routes that are part of the Sentiero del Viandante, while others are extremely challenging and recommended for experienced hikers equipped with proper gear. Starting points are from Dervio, Tremenico, or from the Valtellina side of the mountain. Several routes are also available for winter ascents, but only accessible with ice climbing equipment.
