Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Rocchetta: history, faith and timeless views
Nestled in the evocative greenery of Adda Nord Park, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Rocchetta represents one of the most fascinating and historically rich sites in Brianza. This small architectural gem, located in the municipality of Cornate d'Adda, was built in its current form in 1386, thanks to the generous donation of Beltrando da Cornate, a Milanese physician belonging to a noble family originally from Cornate.
The sanctuary stands on a historically strategic site: the remains on which it is built date back to a late Roman fortification from the 5th century AD, likely part of a broader defense system. Archaeological excavations confirm that the area was abandoned for a period, but between the 8th and 9th centuries AD it once again became a place of worship, as evidenced by valuable discoveries.
During the Early Middle Ages, the area continued to be inhabited: two tombs found confirm the presence of a small community. In the Late Middle Ages, an oven and a second cistern, dated to the 14th century, were built.
Despite centuries of abandonment and transformation, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Rocchetta has always maintained a central role in popular devotion. It remains a destination for pilgrimages, religious ceremonies and cultural initiatives, and represents a strong symbol of identity and belonging for the community of Cornate d'Adda.
