Lake Segrino

A small green lake nestled in the mountains

Lake Segrino, a small pool compared to Lake Como, preserves a unique naturalistic charm throughout the entire territory. A place of relaxation and nature, numerous legends and historical facts are connected to it. Among them is its name, Segrino, which may have been given by none other than Queen Theodolinda, who, passing through these territories, was dazzled by the emerald hidden between Mount Cornizzolo and Mount Scioscia. In this regard, a possible root of the name is in the German See-Grün, meaning "Green Lake." This legend, followed by many others, also inspired Carlo Emilio Gadda, who, like many other authors, found overwhelming inspiration in Lake Segrino and throughout the Lake Como territory.

Another legend brings the events of Saint George and the Dragon to Lake Segrino as well: the lake was indeed home to a terrible beast, to whom Cleodolinda, a princess, was surrendered to appease its beastly wrath. Cleodolinda was left in the shade of a wild elderberry tree, awaiting her tragic fate... But the dragon knight saved the princess, giving her a sprig of elderberry as a gift. The princess, overwhelmed by the emotion of being saved, accidentally dropped some elderberry flowers into a dough, giving rise to the delicious Panmeini.

On Lake Como, every story told leads to something to savor, whether it be a panorama, a dessert, or an exciting excursion.
But Lake Segrino, almost at the center between Como, Lecco, and Bellagio, is the perfect place for a restorative break. Its perimeter is completely walkable and closed to motor traffic. The pedestrian and cycling path is almost entirely flat, making it perfect for families with children. Dogs are allowed, provided they are on a leash and equipped with a muzzle if necessary. Lake Segrino is also suitable for swimming: motorboats are not permitted, so basking in the sun at the Lido and then taking a peaceful swim in its waters can only be disturbed by the occasional canoe or coots. Looking around, however, one realizes that humans are the disturbance: the flora and fauna in this place coexist in perfect balance... Among the reeds, you can admire how the grebe cares for its young, or with perseverance and patience, a heron might stop by these parts. Do not be enchanted by toads in love, though: they can be truly deafening!

But as tradition dictates, a legend also exists about the animals: it appears that pike also live in Lake Segrino. They are not aggressive, yet the allure of danger attracts the curious toward the water.
In any case, Lake Segrino can be an interesting off-the-map outing that may hold interesting surprises. The entire route covers a distance of 5 km, but the itinerary can be extended, taking you toward Mount Cornizzolo or in the direction of Canzo. For the less energetic, the second option is recommended, especially in summer: Lake Segrino is positioned at the end of the Vallassina valley; being shaded and nestled in a narrow corridor, it is an area that is always well-ventilated. It is therefore pleasant to leave your car in Eupilio, walk around the lake and head toward Canzo, then stop at one of the charming establishments that embellish this picturesque village.
