Kitesurfing
Follow the blowing wind and master the air with your kite
Kitesurfing is a sailing discipline, a variation of surfing, in which a sail, called a kite, is used and controlled by a specific bar. The kitesurfer is propelled across the surface of the water by the sail, which carries them over the waves; direction and thrust are governed by the bar.
The perfect area to practice this sport on Lake Como is the Upper Lake, thanks to the winds that blow all year round. A quiet bay, free from small boat traffic during the winter, is located in front of Mandello del Lario, 10 minutes from Lecco. Here, during the winter, the spectacle of Lake Como is marvelous, amidst shades of gray and the power of the wind.
In the North Lake Como area, a light thermal wind blows in the morning, allowing beginners to practice. This typical Lake Como wind is known as the Tivano. In the afternoon, one can feel the bursting force of the Breva, a more intense thermal wind that allows experienced kitesurfers to play between the air and the waves. On these occasions, it is possible to admire the kitesurfs dancing on the water from the shore, performing spectacular acrobatics and jumps.
To get started with this spectacular discipline, there are several rental centers and courses: the spots most frequented by enthusiasts from all over Europe are found between Dervio, Colico, and Domaso. In fact, it is common to meet kitesurfers from Germany, the Netherlands, and Great Britain here, who organize their holidays around this adrenaline-filled sport.
