Diving in Piona

Discover the Piona Bay Underwater Theme Park and explore the depths of Lake Como

The Piona Bay Underwater Theme Park was created to encourage and pave the way for a very particular type of sports tourism: scuba diving. Lake Como might seem like a step toward niche diving, technically complex and perhaps not satisfying from the perspective of underwater scenery. The scarcity of light, cold water, and currents best not trusted make Lake Como resemble an unknown man in a dark suit, yet handsome and with a magnetic gaze.

To overcome any hesitation about diving in Lake Como, we recommend first visiting the Piona Underwater Park, just a few kilometers from Colico.
The underwater park consists of a platform positioned at 6 m depth, raised above the muddy bottom to perform exercises in complete safety—an ideal place to begin familiarizing yourself with the waters of Lake Como. A structure has also been created at 9.5 m depth for observing the lake's fauna without disturbance, as well as a small Cousteau House, a structure inspired by the Hangar of the futuristic Sudan project. Currently, 2 reference buoys have been positioned for dives: one to identify Cousteau's house and the other to easily locate the historic Piona Comballo. These attractions are complemented by the hunt for remains of Roman quarries scattered throughout the bay.

The story of the depths of this bay could be told by Rinaldo Marcelli, a diver born and raised on these shores and in these waters, who still does not abandon this great passion today. More fish than man, Marcelli has been diving in these waters for 50 years now, making us understand that "The lake's waters are like my home..." So why not explore these depths, which represent one of the few remaining wild faces of Lake Como?
