Caves and caving activities around Lake Como: an underground world to explore
The history of speleology in the Lecco area, with its pioneering, exploratory, and scientific character, dates back to the early 19th century.
Splendid and evocative creations of nature, caves lead experienced visitors into the bowels of the earth, among limestone sculptures and passages through rocks eroded by time and water. In every journey inside the caves, a world of mysteries and surreal environments unfolds. Undertaking a caving excursion is not suitable for all hikers: the Mountain Guides operating in the area are available to provide information and assistance regarding local speleology.
Rescia Caves: natural caves and the enchanting Santa Giulia gorge
The seven natural caves of Rescia are located in Claino con Osteno, a town overlooking the Italian shore of Lake Lugano. In these cavities, one can admire how water has created sinuous curves just as an artist shapes a sculpture from a rough piece. Water, with its force, has carved tunnels and passages, creating imposing stalactites and stalagmites.
The route, approximately half a kilometer long, has been well known since the 18th century, while the caves were united into a single itinerary in the last century. The Rescia Caves offer the opportunity to observe the life of a cave up close, from its growth stage to its fossil state.
Along with the excursion inside the caves, it is possible to reach and admire a marvelous gorge, called Santa Giulia, with a 70 m waterfall.
The Rescia Caves are open to visitors from April to September, during afternoon hours.
