Castello di Vezio
Romanesque fortification and panoramic balcony overlooking Lake Como
This is one of the most beautiful castles on Lake Como. It is a 5th-century Romanesque fortification, enclosed and developed around a square tower with reconstructed battlements that features an authentic drawbridge. The enclosure has three open towers and other walls that are barely discernible among the plateaus and olive trees.
Legend has it that the construction of the castle is linked to the wishes of the Lombard Queen Theodelinda, who spent the final years of her life in this area. The Castle of Vezio houses a raptor care and training center that allows the public to learn about, appreciate, and support this ancient art. With this initiative, entering the Castle of Vezio brings back the atmosphere of times past, among falcons and falconers.
Training sessions are held in the Castle garden, giving visitors the opportunity to take photographs, see the various specimens up close, and be entertained by the falconer with detailed explanations about the history of falconry, its modern use, the biology and training of raptors.
During falconry demonstration days, visitors can admire the grace of the raptors and immerse themselves completely in the medieval atmosphere that can only be fully recreated here. The Castle of Vezio is open from March to November.
