Basilica of San Pietro al Monte: A Walk Toward a Hidden Treasure in the Woods
The Benedictine complex of S. Pietro al Monte in Civate is undoubtedly one of the most interesting abbey complexes around Lake Como, serving as a destination of significant historical, artistic, and religious interest. Situated at 662 meters above sea level, it can be reached from the village of Civate in approximately one hour on foot.
Every year, many visitors climb the steep mule track to the slopes of Mount Cornizzolo to experience the serene atmosphere of the site, the millennial history told by the white stones, and the spirituality emanating from the austere beauty of its artistic heritage.
The origins of the Basilica of San Pietro al Monte above Civate are lost in time: the first founding documents date back to the 7th-8th century, while tradition traces its foundation to the Lombard era. The church dates back to the 11th century. Inside, there are fresco cycles and stucco reliefs from the 11th and 12th centuries, as well as the most interesting apocalyptic narrative of Italian Romanesque art: the triumph of good over evil with the defeat of the dragon by the Archangel Michael.
The Basilica of San Pietro al Monte can only be reached on foot, following the mule track that connects the Benedictine village to the oldest part of the town of Civate. The path is shaded and perfect for families with children, although the hike takes about an hour. It is ideal to visit in spring and autumn, or during the early morning hours in summer. From the route, it is possible to admire unique views of Lake Annone, Mount Resegone, and Mount Barro.
The Basilica is open on Sundays from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM for visits; guided tours are available upon request. From March to October, the Basilica is also open on Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
The Basilica is open for services every first Sunday of the month: on such occasions, please maintain appropriate behavior, including in the outdoor area of the Basilica.
