Baradello Castle
Baradello Castle in Como: The Protector of the Lake City
Baradello Castle is located in the Spina Verde Regional Park, in a strategic position for territorial control: from its tower, one can overlook the city, the plains toward Milan, and the vast foothills.
It was Emperor Barbarossa who commissioned the construction of the tower on the remains of older fortifications following his victory in the battle against Milan. A small museum is housed inside the tower, preserving original archaeological artifacts. The tower's dominant position allows it to be identified from any point in the city, and it is clearly visible to anyone approaching Como from any direction; this explains the importance of a watchtower on a height as strategic as it was impregnable.
Now a popular destination for outings and excursions, the Baradello Tower is associated with the famous Palio, which celebrates the ancient districts of the city of Como during the first weeks of September.
Visits to Baradello Castle are available from April to September on weekends. Midweek visits are available for groups of more than 10 people and require prior reservation.
