Antiquarium and Comacina Island

Comacina Island: a green dot in the placid waters of the Lake

Remains of a Roman marble colonnade preserved under the Church of San Giovanni, Early Christian evidence and wall frescoes, numerous remains of Romanesque churches including the crypt of the Basilica of Sant'Eufemia: this and much more constitutes the precious artistic heritage of Comacina Island, as well as defining its undeniable charm.

The only island on Lake Como, it was a protagonist of Comascan history in the Roman and Early Middle Ages, serving as a military oppidum, a political hub, and one of the most important religious centers of the diocese. A tragic setting during the battles with Barbarossa, it was abandoned until the beginning of the 20th century. From then on, it became an archaeological site whose importance transcends local borders, placing it among the most interesting archaeological areas in Northern Italy for the Early Middle Ages.

Starting from the Antiquarium Archaeological Museum, near which it is possible to visit the Romanesque Church of Santa Maria Maddalena with its famous Gothic bell tower, you embark on the waters of the Lario, crossing the so-called Zoca de l’Oli, until you reach Comacina Island.
