5 Things to Do in Upper Lake Como
The northern area of Lake Como will amaze you!
North Lake Como is the area composed of several fishing villages that dot the northwestern coast of the Lario. The area is strategic for visiting the lake and its surroundings. These places are perfect for spending a relaxing holiday amidst the waters of the lake and the beauty of nature. The wonderful views from the shores look towards the Piona Abbey and Mount Legnone, on the opposite bank of Lake Como. This area is well connected with Colico and the Valtellina.
Forte Fuentes and Montecchio Nord
Colico was chosen for the construction of these forts due to its position at the end of the Valtellina, which has always been a connecting artery between the valleys, the lake, and Milan. Forte Montecchio Nord, a structure that can be considered modern, was completed at the end of 1914 and represents the most technologically advanced Italian installation of the First World War. The Forte di Fuentes stands on Montecchio Est, in the Pian di Spagna. It was built between 1601 and 1605. The Fort, commissioned by the Spanish governor of Milan, had the task of defending the border with the territory of the Grisons, which at the time extended as far as Colico. Both are open to the public only via guided tours.
Piona Abbey
Located on a peninsula that stretches over the calm waters of Lake Como, creating a bay of brilliant greens, the Piona Abbey offers one of the most beautiful panoramic views of Upper Lake Como and the western coast of the Lario. The Piona Abbey has a mysterious charm, perhaps given by the rustle of the wind passing through the cloisters of this monastery. Strolling through the walls and vegetable gardens, still cultivated by the monks who live in this wonderful place, one can admire a breathtaking panorama while breathing in an atmosphere of calm and peace, ideal for soothing restless souls. Finally, the mastery of the monks of Piona is certain: even today they cultivate herbs, aromatics, and plants to create herbal remedies and liqueurs, always and only respecting their ancient recipes and traditions.
Palazzo Gallio
Built on the remains of the city's ancient castle, it is one of the most imposing buildings overlooking the shores of the Upper Lario. It is situated directly on Lake Como, facing Mount Legnone; it possesses two wonderful terraces overlooking the lake, from which one can enjoy a splendid view. Palazzo Gallio is open all year round and hosts numerous cultural events, such as concerts, exhibitions, art shows, and workshops. It is also a renowned location for events and weddings on Lake Como.
Canyoning
This involves descending small mountain streams enclosed between high rock walls, overcoming obstacles using specific techniques: the most famous area for canyoning on Lake Como is called Val Bodengo.
Located in the most remote corner of the valleys surrounding Lake Como, Val Bodengo has been able to reinvent itself thanks to a sport as extreme as it is fun: canyoning! This specialty must only be tackled in the company of qualified guides, but it is an incredible experience: plunging into crystalline waters, sliding down waterfalls and rocks, jumping into the whirlpools of the stream... Canyoning in Val Bodengo is the answer for those seeking a true thrill!
Sailing
Prestigious sailing clubs are located in the Upper Lario, and almost every town has a sailing base. It is therefore easy to understand that it will not be difficult to practice this sport in these very places. All clubs provide courses for beginners and non-beginners alike, from April to October. It is also possible to organize special and exciting cruises on Lake Como with larger sailing boats.
